- Degenerative arthritis of the midfoot and hindfoot joints occurs commonly. Symptoms vary from mild weight-bearing discomfort to disabling pain.
- The arthritis may be caused by ageing or previous injury / overuse of the foot. There is sometimes a hereditary factor. Less commonly, arthritis may be caused by systemic inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis.
- Swelling and pain of the midfoot or hindfoot may also be caused by conditions such as inflammation of the adjacent tendons and rarely, tumours or infections.
- The investigation of midfoot or hindfoot pain and dysfunction requires clinical examination by a specialist and x-rays of the foot.
- Dr Bothma will determine whether additional special investigations are required and once a diagnosis has been made, he will discuss management options comprehensively with you.
