- Arthritis (joint inflammation) may affect the joints in the ball of the foot as well as the joints of the toes.
- There are many forms of arthritis. The most common form is osteoarthritis or degenerative arthritis. Other forms include inflammatory arthritis such as rheumatoid arthritis and arthritis caused by gout.
- Arthritis usually causes pain and swelling but may also result in progressive deformities of the toes. Some forms of arthritis are joint destructive and are better treated earlier than later.
- Nonsurgical treatment can be very effective but disease progression and deformities may require surgical intervention. Dr Bothma will be able to advise you in this regard.
