Degenerative arthritis of the midfoot and hindfoot joints occurs commonly. Symptoms vary from mild weight-bearing discomfort to disabling pain.

The arthritis may be caused by ageing or previous injury / overuse of the foot. There is sometimes a hereditary factor. Less commonly, arthritis may be caused by systemic inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis.

Swelling and pain of the midfoot or hindfoot may also be caused by conditions such as inflammation of the adjacent tendons and rarely, tumours or infections.

The investigation of midfoot or hindfoot pain and dysfunction requires clinical examination by a specialist and x-rays of the foot.

Dr Bothma will determine whether additional special investigations are required and once a diagnosis has been made, he will discuss management options comprehensively with you.

A high foot arch occurs naturally in many feet but may be associated with childhood foot deformities, nerve related problems or arthritic conditions.

A painful high foot arch should be investigated, especially so if the arch increases in height over a period of time or if there is in-turning of the foot.

Dr Bothma will do a physical examination of the lower extremities with x-rays and frequently, additional examinations may be required.

Treatment will depend on the nature and severity of the problem. This will be discussed in detail with you.
