<p>To ensure optimum management of major reconstructive hand problems, Dr Bothma may refer such cases to a <em><u>Dedicated Hand Surgeon</u></em> for management. These include: Wrist or hand joint instabilities, advanced arthritis, hand stiffness, paralysis, multiple tendon injuries, amputations / lost fingers, major nerve damage with numbness, crushed hand, deep infection and previous hand surgery with complications.</p>

<li>A common condition caused by entrapment of a large nerve in the wrist area. Usual symptoms are pain, numbness and tingling of the thumb and fingers.</li>



<li>Depending on the findings at examination and on nerve testing, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome may be treated non-operatively or surgically.</li>



<li>Dr. Bothma will advise you on the most appropriate method of treatment. Surgery is of a minor nature and a fairly quick recovery may be expected.</li>

<li>On making a tight fist or grabbing an object, the thumb or affected fingers get stuck and cannot be smoothly straightened. There is pain where the fingers join the hand.</li>



<li>The condition is usually progressive in nature and depending on the clinical findings at examination, may be treated non-operatively or surgically.</li>

<li>A common and frequently disabling condition involving the tendons that straighten the thumb.</li>



<li>Usually caused by repetitive wrist activity resulting in an inflamed tendon. There is lifting related pain between the thumb and the wrist.</li>



<li>Once the condition is confirmed by examination it may be treated non-operatively or surgically.</li>

<li>Bubble-like swellings, usually over the front or the back of the wrist but commonly also affecting other parts of the hand.</li>



<li>Although mostly painless, they may cause discomfort and are sometimes unsightly.</li>



<li>They are non-cancerous cysts filled with a viscous liquid and usually originate from joints or tendons of the hand and wrist.</li>



<li>Non-operative treatment is often-times not effective and if increasingly problematic, surgical removal is usually recommended.</li>
