Hand and wrist problems not managed by our practice

To ensure optimum management of major reconstructive hand problems, Dr Bothma may refer such cases to a Dedicated Hand Surgeon for management. These include: Wrist or hand joint instabilities, advanced arthritis, hand stiffness, paralysis, multiple tendon injuries, amputations / lost fingers, major nerve damage with numbness, crushed hand, deep infection and previous hand surgery with complications.

Carpal Tunnel

A common condition caused by entrapment of a large nerve in the wrist area. Usual symptoms are pain, numbness and tingling of the thumb and fingers.
Depending on the findings at examination and on nerve testing, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome may be treated non-operatively or surgically.
Dr. Bothma will advise you on the most appropriate method of treatment. Surgery is of a minor nature and a fairly quick recovery may be expected.

Trigger Finger

A common condition affecting the flexor tendons of the thumb and fingers.
On making a tight fist or grabbing an object, the thumb or affected fingers get stuck and cannot be smoothly straightened. There is pain where the fingers join the hand.
The condition is usually progressive in nature and depending on the clinical findings at examination, may be treated non-operatively or surgically.
Dr Bothma will advise you on the most effective way this problem may be managed.

Tendon Entrapment

A common and frequently disabling condition involving the tendons that straighten the thumb.
Usually caused by repetitive wrist activity resulting in an inflamed tendon. There is lifting related pain between the thumb and the wrist.
Once the condition is confirmed by examination it may be treated non-operatively or surgically.
Dr Bothma will advise accordingly.

Ganglion

Bubble-like swellings, usually over the front or the back of the wrist but commonly also affecting other parts of the hand.
Although mostly painless, they may cause discomfort and are sometimes unsightly.
They are non-cancerous cysts filled with a viscous liquid and usually originate from joints or tendons of the hand and wrist.
Non-operative treatment is often-times not effective and if increasingly problematic, surgical removal is usually recommended.
Dr Bothma will advise you on treatment options and the most appropriate treatment for your specific problem.

Soft tissue injuries (skin cuts, stabs, cut tendons, cut nerves, fingertip/nail injuries) and bone injuries (fractures and dislocations of the wrist bones, hand bones and fingers) are common.
Falls, sport, broken glassware, knives, kitchen appliances, hand tools and power tools are usually involved.
Dr Bothma has extensive experience in the management of hand and wrist injuries.
